Never underestimate the strength of Donald Trump
Welcome to the ITV News digest bringing you the best of our original journalism, insight and analysis from across the nation, regions and the world.
Hello, I'm Robert Moore, one of the two correspondents in the Washington bureau. On Tuesday night, I reported for ITV News on my sixth US Election.
As in 2016, this campaign was stunning in how the analysts and pollsters underestimated the strength of Donald Trump. For the second time in eight years, he delivered a political earthquake.
In 2016, Democrats plausibly argued it was a fluke. There can no such argument this time. Trump won the popular vote and swept all seven battleground states.
Republicans won control of the Senate. They may win the House. In other words, this was a sweeping vindication for Donald Trump. He has faced four trials and nearly 100 criminal charges. He was convicted of multiple felonies in New York.
Furthermore, and even more dramatically, Trump faced two assassination attempts. One came within millimetres of killing him. Remember, he was impeached twice during his last presidency.
And yet here we are. Trump will be America’s 47th president in 73 days.
What really amazes me every four years is not the politics of the US, but the skill and dedication of our technical and engineering colleagues who arrive from London. An incredible studio is constructed in a few days and works flawlessly. It's a labour of love and it shows.
They'll be back to do it all again for the inauguration on January 20. The great maverick is back in the White House. The world should brace for some serious aftershocks.

Patients waiting years for wheelchairs from NHS’ leading provider
The son of a man with motor neurone disease who died while waiting for a wheelchair from the NHS’ leading provider has accused them of "sincerely failing his dad".
John Clarke, 67, was diagnosed with the disease in April. The NHS integrated care board in Stoke-on-Trent told him that AJM Healthcare would be providing his wheelchair and, following an assessment in May, he was told that it would be delivered in July.
But he died last month, never having got his wheelchair. See the exclusive report from North of England reporter Amy Welch on ITVX.
‘Libraries are statutory in prisons but not in primary schools’
Children's reading in the UK has hit a "crisis" point, with the number enjoying it in their free time dropping to just one in three, a report suggests.
ITV News’ Social Affairs Correspondent Sarah Corker spoke to Cressida Cowell - author of the ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ books - about what’s to be done.
“One in four schools in disadvantaged areas don’t have a library,” she said. “Libraries are statutory in prisons but not in primary schools - we have to reverse that.”

She died two weeks ago. Speaking to ITV Tyne Tees, Alan said: "She said 'I'll be dead before this is sorted' and it's come to fruition."
Meanwhile, Sir Alan Bates gave evidence to MPs about the ongoing delays to compensation. He told us that he’d written to Sir Keir Starmer a month ago - but has yet to hear anything back from the prime minister.
